"The nature of what it is to be literate and the opportunities offered by achieving literacy have changed radically with the dawn of our new information societies. Since those who are literate now have ever more access to resources to educate themselves and enrich their lives, the gap between the literate and illiterate becomes wider than ever, and a problem all the more pressing to solve. While this gap may be more significant, thanks to the democratization of technology (along with the reduced expense), more people have access to information, tools, and technology than ever before. Thus, the means exist to close this gap faster and more efficiently today than in any previous generation.
